As a Reformed Presbyterian, Dobbin established a congregation at Rock Creek, approximately one mile north of the present town of Gettysburg. In 1774 he purchased 300 acres of land which became known as “Dobbin’s Farm” and began to construct his house.

Surmounting the building is an entablature with a molded architrave, a wide unadorned frieze, excepting the “United States Custom House” carved into the west front in 1964, and a dentiled cornice. Above this is an open balustrade, behind which a low pitched roof is barely visible. The bronze doors have molded limestone surrounds and are topped by triangular pediments supported by acanthus leaf consoles. In Hush, Flanagan's 2016 movie, a masked killer stalks author Maddie Young (Kate Siegel) in her remote home. Young is the author of a book called—you guessed it—Midnight Mass.

This is a mega-popular series with a relatively small cast. Not to be flippant, but the characters in ghost stories are basically self-quarantined in their haunted houses, right?

Even if it would now probably have to exist outside of any connections to Hill House and Bly Manor, since Flanagan's overall deal with Netflix expired after Usher. I mean, it could be a C-SPAN Original Series, and I would still be downright possessed by anticipation. Despite being entirely separate from the Haunting series, fans will see a number of familiar faces, including Kate Siegel and Henry Thomas, who each starred in both of the Haunting seasons.

And OMG, it could have been the best one yet, because he was aiming to put his signature spin on the works of literary icon Richard Matheson. When I adapted Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House as a Netflix series, there was much talk about how to continue the Haunting anthology. We followed Hill House with The Haunting of Bly Manor, based on numerous ghost stories by Henry James. Had there been a third season, I wanted that season to be The Haunting of Hell House.
The first season, Hill House, took its inspiration from Shirley Jackson's novel of the same name from the 1950s, which sees an investigator of the supernatural and three other characters move into a haunted house. But that doesn’t mean the door is shut on a future installment. While there are no current plans for a follow-up to 2018’s The Haunting of Hill House and 2020’s The Haunting of Bly Manor, the topic frequently arises for the team at Intrepid Pictures, whose main heads include Flanagan and CEO Trevor Macy. While Mike Flanagan‘s myriad Netflix series do share certain similarities, each project thus far has proven to have its own unique DNA.
That means the streamer is certainly open to more seasons—or other projects from the duo behind the show. The Terror is a historical period horror series that uses some real events in the backbone of the narrative, which just like Them changes the timeline of the show from season to season. The second run of episodes switches from icy haunted wastelands to America in WWII, using the Pacific Invasion as the backdrop for the show. The premise revolves around Japanese folklore, while the third season sees the action switch to a psychiatric hospital and one man’s battle with demonic forces. Mike Flanagan has hammered the final nail in The Haunting‘s coffin. According to a recent post on his Tumblr, there will be no third season of acclaimed horror anthology series.
Flanagan's producing partner, Trevor Macy, told Vanity Fair of The Haunting of Bly Manor, "The process is the same, in that it's a literary remix," he shared. "You want to update the story, you want to find whatever fertile ground for elevating the character that you can in the source material, but we obviously took some liberties in updating it with a more modern setting." Ever better, like Haunting, the Midnight series looks to be another anthology. Although Netflix billed it as a “limited series,” Flanagan already has a follow-up, The Midnight Club, which finished filming in September 2021. Although the official Netflix Haunting social media accounts showed some activity in 2021, it turned out it was not to preview a new Haunting installment.
But it does mean there might be some time before Flanagan’s schedule is freed up for more Haunting. Halloween season is upon us, and thankfully, The Haunting of Hill House has a follow-up sequel series in Netflix’s The Haunting of Bly Manor, with several members of the original cast playing new spooky roles in this new spooky story. Take Bly Manor's tagline, "Dead doesn't mean gone." In another horror work, this sentence would be purely foreboding. Flora's wedding takes place in a historic hotel in California. Based on the exchange of scary stories in the first episode, the hotel used to be a convent. Perhaps it will be the inspiration for season 3 of the Haunting series. There was a two-year gap between The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, and we might have to wait even longer for future Haunting installments.
